The Mona Lisa has become an object of global attraction rather than a work of art I actually love the idea of treating it as such. The Italian wing is always a nightmare because of it. The people are the problem. Too many. The first time I saw it there were few people there for the next year or so still not many. You could stand there and look without being disturbed. Saw it the first time in 1986, and again, I believe, in 1991. A few of us just standing there looking. No photos or pushing, no lines. Not my favorite painting, but nice to see it. It’s one part of an amazing museum. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of seeing that one particular painting then don’t. Stripping others of the opportunity is selfish.
